Hong Kong classrooms are multilingual by default. But dyslexia screeners are built either as native-English tests, or as English–Chinese tests that assume both languages work the same way. Neither accounts for the child who reads Cantonese at home and English at school, or the child whose home language uses a non-alphabetic script.
Native English only
Scores a Cantonese-dominant reader as “at risk” because their English is a second language, not because they are dyslexic.
English–Chinese only
Assumes the same orthographic demands on both scripts. Misses the child whose deficit is script-specific.
